Rising British country/pop singer/songwriter Hollie Shearer burst onto the growing scene at the beginning of May with her incredible debut original single ‘Love You Better’. The track followed on from her cover of ‘Leave Right Now’ which dropped at the start of 2020.
‘Love You Better’ is the first taste of Shearer’s forthcoming EP which will be shared later in the year with new singles coming every 4-5 weeks in the build-up to the record which promises to be one of the best releases of the year.
Here we speak exclusively to Hollie Shearer to discuss her single and upcoming project:
Congratulations on the release of your debut single, how are you finding the response?
Thank you so much! I’ve been so pleased with the response to ‘Love You Better.’ I was naturally a bit nervous releasing it as it’s my first original song but the feedback I have received has been amazing. With my music, it was never about numbers or streams, so just hearing people say it’s helped them or moved them makes me so happy!
Can you tell us a little bit about the writing process for the track?
I wrote ‘Love You Better’ over a year ago now. I wrote it with my friend Duncan Brookfield who is a producer/Singer-Songwriter! I went into the session knowing I wanted to write a song that was personal. For me, opening up wasn’t something that came naturally so for the first couple of hours we were actually just talking. Whoever said music is like therapy is correct!! Once we had an idea of what we wanted to say in the song we would then start coming up with chord progressions melody ideas and it just grew from there. What I love most about writing is that there’s no pressure. It’s a very relaxed environment!
How does it feel to be sharing new music during this lockdown period?
It’s obviously a very strange and difficult time for everyone at the moment and I was worried as to whether I should release my EP or not. However, I am happy we decided to move forward as even in these hard times I believe music really can help a lot of people. It’s always nice to hear new music especially if you’re sitting at home with nothing to do. If anything, it’s probably allowed more people to hear it. I’m just so grateful for everyone that has listened!
This is the first song to be shared off a forthcoming EP project, when can we expect the next single?
The next song is being released on June 5th… I have 4 more songs that will be released every 4-5 weeks over the next few months. All of the upcoming tracks have different sounds to one another so I’m looking forward to sharing them all!
What kind of topics can we expect to be covered across the next releases?
Some of the songs I wrote are from other people’s perspectives and some are personal. That’s one thing I love about music, is being able to put yourself into someone else’s shoes, and feel what they feel.
What kind of reach are you hoping to achieve with Love You Better and the EP?
I am taking things step by step, and experimenting with my sound with every new recording I make. I don’t believe there’s such a thing as an overnight success, so I am just hoping that people will engage with the lyrics and relate to my music and hopefully they will want to come on the journey with me throughout the forthcoming releases. It’s an exciting time!
You’ve been to Nashville to work on your music, what was that experience like?
It was amazing! It’s definitely an experience I will remember forever, and I feel very lucky that I had the opportunity to fly there and write with the writers that I did. Nashville has an amazing vibe and energy to it, and everyone has a great passion for music, so for me, I was in heaven. I made some great friendships and cannot wait to hopefully go back one day!
Who have you worked with on this upcoming project? For this EP coming out, I worked with Duncan Brookfield. We co-wrote all the songs together and he also mixed and produced them. It was great finding a connection with him and being able to work alongside him.
How are you finding the UK Country scene as a new artist?
I love that the popularity of country music is continuously growing in the UK and I think it’s a great time for new artists like me to be putting music out there… With my genre being country/pop it’s warming to hear people say so many positive things.
Looking ahead, what things can we expect from you when it’s safe to perform live, etc?
I can’t wait to perform my songs when it’s safe to do so! I’ve spent so long behind the scenes working and writing the EP and upcoming album, It feels like forever since I’ve played live. But I will definitely be doing as many live shows as I can!!
Along with Spotify, ‘Love You Better’ is available to download and stream across all other platforms including Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon Music, and YouTube. Song and feature image appears courtesy of ‘LITTLE BIG MANAGEMENT in association with BECCA BARR MANAGEMENT.
